Employing AI for lesson planning and assessment can significantly elevate the learning experience, as exemplified in a Business Studies classroom. Using ChatGPT, four distinct model answers were generated, each highlighting a specific exam skill—Knowledge, Application, Analysis, and Evaluation. This case study explores how the integration of AI in lesson planning can streamline the assessment process, encourage skill-based learning, and enhance student engagement.

Exam boards usually assess students based on a set of predetermined skills. For Business Studies, these are Knowledge,Application, Analysis, and Evaluation. ChatGPT was leveraged to prepare students for exams in a unique way.

Setting the Stage: The teacher starts by selecting an exam question that covers key Business Studies concepts and skills.

Generating Model Answers: The teacher prompts ChatGPT to create four distinct model answers, each focused on a specific skill. A bit of fine-tuning with the prompts ensures the AI’s output aligns closely with the curriculum requirements.

Student Review: During the lesson, students are tasked with evaluating each AI-generated model answer to identify its strengths based on the showcased skill.

Integrative Learning: The students then attempt to write their own answers, amalgamating all four skills—Knowledge, Application,Analysis, and Evaluation—into a comprehensive response.

The result? A highly targeted and effective lesson plan that not only covers curriculum essentials but also encourages students to think critically about how they apply different skills in exam scenarios.

The scenario in this case study is genuine and based upon real events and data, however its narration has been crafted by AI to uphold a standardised and clear format for readers.

Key Learning

This approach to lesson planning and assessment exemplifies how AI can be more than just an auxiliary tool —it can be an active participant in shaping pedagogical strategies.

The technique saved the teacher significant planning time and allowed students to gain deeper insights into exam skills, which are often tricky to navigate.

Risks

While AI can assist in generating high-quality model answers, the content may still require teacher oversight for alignment with specific grading criteria or standards.

Also, there is the concern of over-reliance on technology for core pedagogical functions, which could, overtime, compromise the personalised aspect of teaching.
