Leadership at a secondary school seeks to embrace sustainability by transitioning from disposable to reusable canteen items. ChatGPT was consulted to anticipate challenges and provide strategic guidance. Through the lens of AI, this case study captures the complexities, potential pitfalls, and recommended interventions to optimise the switch to a more sustainable canteen environment.

The secondary school, catering to 1000 students, saw an opportunity to drive sustainability through its canteen practices. With only one canteen seating approximately 150 students and two 30-minute breaks, the logistical challenge was evident. The plan was to introduce reusable items exclusively for main meals. Leadership leaned into AI for scenario planning, using ChatGPT to dissect the potential outcomes and devise a strategic approach.

ChatGPT's analysis revealed both immediate and latent challenges, from logistical hurdles and hygiene concerns to breakage and resource consumption. By casting a comprehensive AI-driven lens over the situation, leadership gained insights beyond traditional brainstorming, uncovering nuanced potential issues like student behavioural adaptation and the need for a phased implementation.

The chat is detailed in the resource links.

The scenario in this case study is genuine and based upon real events and data, however its narration has been crafted by AI to uphold a standardised and clear format for readers.

Key Learning

AI can meticulously analyse complex scenarios, presenting often overlooked details and implications.

AI-driven scenario planning goes beyond surface-level challenges, predicting potential secondary and tertiary effects.

Data-driven Decisions: AI tools, like ChatGPT, encourage evidence-based decisions, minimising biases and emotional influences.

Risks

While AI provides valuable insights, solely depending on it might overlook the human-centric nuances crucial in educational settings.

The quality of AI insights is contingent upon the quality and completeness of data fed into it. Incomplete scenarios can lead to incomplete insights.

Though AI aims for objectivity, it can sometimes reinforce existing biases present in the data or framing of questions.
